On Stack Exchange, we believe the core moderators should come from the community, and be elected by the community itself through popular vote. We hold regular elections to determine who these community moderators will be.

Community moderators are accorded the highest level of privilege on our community, and should themselves be exemplars of positive behavior and leaders within the community.

Our general criteria for moderators is as follows:

  • patient and fair
  • leads by example
  • shows respect for their fellow community members in their actions and words
  • open to some light but firm moderation to keep the community on track and resolve (hopefully) uncommon disputes and exceptions

Every election has three phases:

  1. Nomination
  2. Primary
  3. Election

Please participate in the moderator elections by voting, and perhaps even by nominating yourself to be a community moderator!

I believe in a light-touch community-driven moderation style & the SE Theory of Moderation. The community decides the rules & uses voting & review queues, with moderators as human exception handlers for the few cases in which advanced mod tools are actually needed to enforce community-set rules.

I'm the 333rd most active user on ELL by overall reputation, with an estimated 73K people reached according to my profile page. On Stack Exchange overall, I've earned >25K rep, with ELL as my 5th most active site (ELU is my 2nd).

I'm 1 of only 17 to have the Fanatic badge on Meta.ELL.SE. Meta.SE is my 6th most active SE site.

I'm about to start a new position teaching advanced ESL, so I plan to spend more time on this site than I have in the past. If you vote me in, that will include more formal moderation contributions.

I'm also partially throwing my hat in the ring so that other well-qualified candidates think "I could do better!" & self-nominate.

My answers to the Q&A are here!

Hello ELL Community!

I’m Max and I’ve been active on this site for a little over two years. I think this is a great site for learners to ask questions and receive answers. So far, I’ve contributed mostly with answers, gaining more than 30k points. But now I want to contribute more as a moderator.

My goal as a moderator is to help keep the site running smoothly. I’ve done so by working the review queues, flagging objectionable or obsolete content, and leaving suggestions for users to improve their posts. As a moderator, I want to continue doing the little things. But I also want to be able to handle the big issues quickly so that visitors can reach quality content without distractions. Of course, not all issues are black and white. For those gray areas, I would step back, listen to the community, and consult with the experienced mods to determine the best course of action.

I may not have the best answers, but I always try my best. As a mod, I would do the same.

2018 Moderator Election Q&A - Answers

Hello friends :-) My reputation isn’t high, my badges are not many. However the reason I nominate myself is because I represent YOU. Many of you do not have much reputation, nor do you have many badges. But you are the majority of this community, and it is time a moderator represented the general public, rather than a select few individuals who dominate procedures.

I learned so much from your questions just like you learn from my answers. As moderator, I just want to help people ask better questions and most importantly get better answers. My priority is to make sure the environment here stays peaceful and cooperative in contrary to many other sites. I've put in so much effort to helping as many askers as possible, and I'd love to be able to do more by being a mod :) “NO QUESION IS A BAD QUESTION-SOME ARE JUST MORE FIXEABLE THAN OTHERS”

Go English Language Learners! WE CAN DO IT!!!!!!!

If you support me, I thank you, and if you do not, I thank you double for reading this nonetheless :-)

My Q/A Moderator Policy

Hello everyone! They say the third time's the charm, and I've been encouraged once again to step up for the role of ♦ moderator on ELL. If you elect me, I don't plan on making any radical changes to the site. It already works pretty well. I do think our handling of answers in comments is a little sloppy, but I'd like to improve that gradually. And sometimes we close questions in ways that are confusing or a little misguided… or leave questions untouched that could use a helping hand.

Whether or not I'm elected, I plan to keep reviewing, overhauling questions that need help, and answering. But if you elect me, I can also spend time cleaning up problems around the edges like migration problems, duplicate accounts, problem users, and so forth. Not to mention handling enough ♦ flags to give all the other ♦ mods more time to work on those things themselves.

Vote Nathan Tuggy to help make a good site even better.

(Here are my answers to the questionnaire.)

This election is over.
