On Stack Exchange, we believe the core moderators should come from the community, and be elected by the community itself through popular vote. We hold regular elections to determine who these community moderators will be.

Community moderators are accorded the highest level of privilege on our community, and should themselves be exemplars of positive behavior and leaders within the community.

Our general criteria for moderators is as follows:

  • patient and fair
  • leads by example
  • shows respect for their fellow community members in their actions and words
  • open to some light but firm moderation to keep the community on track and resolve (hopefully) uncommon disputes and exceptions

Every election has three phases:

  1. Nomination
  2. Primary
  3. Election

Please participate in the moderator elections by voting, and perhaps even by nominating yourself to be a community moderator!

Hi everyone!

I am AIQ. This is the first time I am seeing an election here in SE. And I'm thrilled to be running for moderator! I've been a part of the ELL community for almost two years now. And I'm always active in the ELL chat room.

Like many of you, I started by asking questions. Answering questions was never a goal, let alone moderating the site. But something about ELL kept me here, and things changed over time. The brilliant answers and feedback I got from the community soon inspired me to write some of my own answers to your great questions. As I gained access to some of the moderator tools, I started doing some moderator tasks every now and then. Today, I want to contribute to this site as a moderator (i.e., in addition to writing answers and leaving helpful comments).

Now, I haven't been nearly as active in doing review tasks as some of our top reviewers. But I am certain that I will be able to allocate more time towards moderating the site very soon (I will be finishing grad school).

I care about the ELL community. I always put a lot of effort on each and every answer that I write. I will put the same effort in my moderation duties.

Thanks!

Hello, I am Eddie Kal, and I am running for moderator.

Why I am running

  • I am running because I would like to take a more active role in shaping and assisting the community to be more inviting and welcoming. I believe only an equal and friendly site is conducive to sharing and learning for everybody. Making the site an equal and friendly place is easier said than done, and I believe we could do better.
  • I am running because I enjoy going down the review lists. Like Glorfindel, I am also very active in doing reviews, ranking pretty high on the "top reviewers" boards. Although the pandemic has changed my life quite a bit and made this somewhat more challenging for me, I expect to resume actively reviewing soon.
  • As an SE member, I am still learning the ropes. Although I've visited and posted on several SE sites, there's still so much I don't know about the network's mechanisms and tools.
  • I'd love to see more new faces here as much as I'd like to see more activity from old users. The idea of building a knowledge library nurturing sharing and learning is too great to go to seed, not on my watch.

Hi, I'm Glorfindel and I'd like to become your moderator.

Why me?

  • I have some experience with moderating already:
    • I'm quite active in the review queues
    • I was the second user to obtain the Marshal badge
    • I am a ♦ moderator on two other sites in the network: on Ask Different since 2017 and on Chess since 2019
    • I participate in Charcoal HQ where we keep the Stack Exchange network free of spam
  • I know how it feels to learn a language; English is not my mother tongue.
  • I'm an active contributor on Meta Stack Exchange, so I know what's going on on the Stack Exchange network as a whole.

Why not me?

  • I haven't been too active here in the last six months. I promise to be more active when I'm elected, though most moderation work is carried out in the background so you might not see most of it.

Here are my answers to your questionnaire.
