Jan 8, 2017 at 8:55 comment added JUNCINATOR Thanks for the detailed responses but I must say it's getting a bit confusing for me (partially because the number of questions I posed). Just to be 200% sure, would just like to ask once more whether or not using 'how long' with 'lifespan' is redundant. I know 'what is the lifespan' is definitely the most common but does 'how long' also work?
Jan 8, 2017 at 4:55 comment added Peter Well, yes, my comments were geared more towards "long... lifespan", I'm sure a question that may go through parents' minds, after a cat or dog has followed one of their darlings home is "How long do I have to feed this thing?"
Jan 8, 2017 at 4:29 comment added Mari-Lou A What's the (average) life expectancy of a cat/dog/parrot? etc. How many years can a hamster live? There are so many ways of asking.
Jan 8, 2017 at 3:18 comment added Peter I was copying your question which is perfectly understandable and correct, I didn't want you to think is was incorrect. For "lifespan", "What is the lifespan of...?" is often used and a case when "log" would be redundant.
Jan 8, 2017 at 3:04 comment added JUNCINATOR But didn't you state in your answer that asking 'how long is the lifespan of (insert animal)' an acceptable way of asking the longevity? Also, is the sentence 'Where is it currently at in its lifespan?' awkward? Would a native speaker use such construction?
Jan 7, 2017 at 9:40 comment added Peter You would not ask "how long is the lifespan?" since "lifespan" implies length.

Jan 7, 2017 at 9:15 comment added JUNCINATOR Thanks, is 'what is the lifespan of...' more common than 'How king is the lifespan of...'? Also is it sentence 'where is the animal at in its lifespan?' good English?
