The causal relationship with AF seems weaker than with CF [it's important to keep the director from becoming bored and thus insufferable] or BF [actors who were willing to tolerate visible boredom from a director would have been willing to tolerate/"accept" anything from him].

Would the actors be “disappointed in” their director, or ‘disappointed by’ the director's response? Was their expectation that their performances would be received well, or that this specific director would be able to correctly assess their performance? The question implies that the actors know their performance is good, and do not approve of their director's failure to recognize that fact — hmm, actually, maybe it isn't that far off …
