From the movie "Doctor Strange" (2016)

There is an object in this movie called "Sling Ring".

You can read about it on the Marvel Cinematic Universe Wiki.

What exactly does "sling" mean in this context? Does it have something to do with slingshots or something?

  • The link you give provides the definition in the first sentence. I'm not sure what you need beyond that. – Robusto Apr 26 '17 at 18:28
  • @Robusto The question is what does the "sling" in "sling ring" mean, not the definition of the item. A native speaker might have a sense of why it's a "sling ring" and not a "portal ring" but I don't think this question should be dismissed out of hand. – ColleenV Apr 26 '17 at 19:24
  • The first sentence says what the ring does, but not why it's called that. Even as a native speaker I have no idea why it's called a sling ring. The best I can come up with is that it slings you across space, but even that's inaccurate, as really it just opens a portal and you have to jump through it yourself. – Tofystedeth Apr 26 '17 at 20:11

I'm voting to close this question as off-topic because it asks about the meaning of a proper name in a fictional context, and is not about learning English. – user3169 Apr 26 '17 at 20:34
  • @ColleenV: It's what you say it is now that you've edited it. Rather a self-fulfilling prophesy, that. – Robusto Apr 26 '17 at 20:35
