Is the term core common properties (of some objects) grammatical?

The writer wants to address the common properties. From those, he is only interested in the core commonalities (whatever that means in a given context).

To me, this sounds weird due to the word order - noun, adjective, noun. I would be fine with common core properties, although it is debatable if this has the same meaning.
