Coal production fell by nearly a half.

Why is "by" used in this sentence and what is its function?

  • The function of the preposition "by" is head of the preposition phrase "by nearly a half". Semantically, it's used here to mark the extent (a half) of the reduction of coal production. – BillJ Nov 18 at 10:47
  • BillJ is correct. And yes, the sentence is right. 52 is greater by half than 26. 8 is greater by 1 than 7. The price rose by 10% to £55. – Old Brixtonian Nov 18 at 12:43
