I was reading a story and I got confused about why the writer wrote:

She always goes to her art studio on Saturdays. But today she had stayed at home, waiting for me.

Instead of

She always goes to her art studio on Saturdays. But today she has stayed at home, waiting for me.

Why he used past perfect instead of present perfect?

    In the first formulation I would have used "that day" instead of "today": "But that day she had stayed at home, waiting for me". Oct 24 '20 at 15:03
