I want to write a sentence which means that:
I used to go to the gym often, but not anymore.

The sentence that I wrote was this.

"I recently go(went) to the gym often because I become interested in weight training. Now I can’t go to the gym."

I thought that the adverbs of frequency can be used with present-tense verbs, but it's not true anymore. So I'm curious about which tense should be used for the verb 'go' of the first sentence.

What's wrong with 'used to go'? You could also say 'had been going'. (And it needs to be 'had become'.) – Kate Bunting Jan 6 at 9:42
