I'm wondering if "would" is used properly in the following, or "will" should be used instead.

A: Where's John now?

B: I don't know for certain. He would be at home now.

A: When will John come back?

B: I don't know for certain. He would be back by seven. / He would have come back by seven.

I'm thinking about Merriam-Webster's definition:

9: COULD the barrel would hold 20 gallons

10: used in auxiliary function to express doubt or uncertainty the explanation … would seem satisfactory
