Can you finish the sentence, please? – Ron Jensen Jan 27 '16 at 18:56
  • "The quartiles, whose importance has been laid out in chapter x, are y" – user5569792 Jan 27 '16 at 20:23

To avoid ascribing a personality to a statistical quantity, I would rephrase the sentence to read,

"The quartiles, the importance of which has been laid out in chapter x, are y."
