I came across this sentence in [an article by John McPhee][1] but I'm unable to parse it. Could you please help me parse it? 


The sentence reads


> By the end of 1945, I had passed the point of no return. **I was in the soup now good.**



Basically, I can't figure out what **good** is doing there.
