This tag is for questions seeking a word that fits a meaning. Please demonstrate why you expect the word to exist in English. For example you could tell us a word that means the same in another language. Please use a bilingual dictionary and include the result of your research. This tag is for questions seeking a word that fits a meaning.

English is a very rich language and one that borrows freely from other languages. Nevertheless, not every meaning has a single word that can express it. This is particularly the case in meanings that apply to concepts outside of English-speaking cultures, or to very precise nuanced meanings.

When searching for a word, three tools are useful: a bilingual dictionary, an English thesaurus, and a monolingual English dictionary. It may also be useful to have a thesaurus and dictionary in your native language too.

If there is a particular word in your native language, look it up in the bilingual dictionary. This might give some English words or phrases that have a similar meaning. If you want to check the meaning and nuance of the English words, then check them in the monolingual dictionary. If you find that the word in English doesn't have quite the right nuance, then use the thesaurus to find words with similar meanings and verify them in the monolingual dictionary.

Be aware that sometimes there might not be any word with exactly the right meaning in English, or what is expressed as a noun in your language might be expressed as adjective+noun in English (for example). Or English might just borrow the word from your native language, but the nuance and cultural expectations might be quite different. The word that precisely expresses your meaning might be very rare, obsolete or technical in English.
