What I do
I'm currently finishing up my bachelor's degree in computer science at the University of Utah, and I'm hoping to be accepted into the U's BS/MS program to pursue a master's in CS in just one extra year. I work as a research assistant in the U's CS department under the direction of Dr Matt Might.
I am also pursuing a minor in linguistics, because I think language is incredibly interesting and fun to learn about! Phonetics is my favorite area of linguistics, and I have been known to pore through IPA charts attempting to recreate all the sounds I find. (Am I successful? Probably not as much as I'd like to think.)
How I got started
I first got into web development with HTML4 For Dummies when I was in the third or fourth grade, and then I started writing "real" code when I was about 11 after picking up Crash Course in C (which is probably not a great starting point, to be honest).
I enjoy programming in most aspects (although I prefer not to do frontend web development). I've learned a lot so far, and I plan to continue learning as long as I can. I recently discovered that participating on StackExchange is a great way to keep sharp, so here I am!
My true passion is space exploration, although all forms of technological advancement are exciting to me. My goal is to work for a company that pushes the bounds of human ability while also providing me with enough challenges and learning opportunities to keep growing.
I play guitar and Magic: The Gathering as hobbies, and have been swimming competitively since the ninth grade. I recently obtained a DSLR (Canon Rebel T6s!) because I've always wanted to learn photography, and I have also begun writing in my spare time to work on my creativity.
Reading is a another pastime of mine. My favorite books are (in no particular order):
- The Lord of the Rings — JRR Tolkien
- Brave New World — Aldous Huxley
- The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy — Douglas Adams
- Illusions: The Adventures of a Reluctant Messiah — Richard Bach
- The Foundation series — Isaac Asimov
Recent books I've enjoyed have been Andy Weir's The Martian and James A Corey's Leviathan Wakes (the first book in the series The Expanse).
