'Specifies the beach sand' why possessive not used
In this sentence, 'beach' acts as an adjective and 'sand' is the noun it modifies.

A lot of words for clothing on the bottom half of the body work like this: pants, jeans, trousers and knickers act according to this pattern. So do tools like scissors and shears.

Question about the tense of "is" in "We are sorry that we thought it is well-known"
It is far, far, more common to say "I thought it was" than "I thought it is". (I am not sure if "I thought it is" is wrong, though.)
