respected sir "Respected Sir" - is it correct to use in emails?

My English teacher said it's not correct to use " respected"Respected Sir" in mail or application because "sir""Sir" itself means respected person I. I have been using it since time immemorial Please. Please give your opinion and let me tell you I am not a native speaker of English but I am very much eager to learn it.
