A question about Why do we not use a preposition like "on" in "I met him last Friday"?

In the following sentence " I meet him on friday" ,:

I meet him on Friday.

we use preposition 'on' before 'friday' 'Friday', but in the following sentence "I met him last friday":

I met him last Friday.

we dontdon't use preposition before 'last friday' "last Friday". theThe word 'friday''Friday' is normally noun but when we add 'last' in front of it  , does it become adverb  ?
