joining sentences without the subject

I am having following constructions.

  1. Decomposition of data into simple blocks are presented by (Lin, 2013).
  2. Lin (2013) illustrates that the data gaps can be manipulated with the symmetric constraints.

can I combine them as

Decomposition of data into simple blocks are presented by (Lin, 2013) and illustrates that the data gaps can be manipulated with the symmetric constraints.

But i am bouted this is grammetically wrong as the subject of 2nd sentence is Lin but not the decomposition (i think subject of 1st sentence is decomposition of data). So, how could this correct thid? I feel it should be ... and he illustrates that the ...
